“We have procured insurance cover for 5,000 frontline health workers. At this point, I must commend the insurance sector for their support in achieving this within a short period of time.”
This was the statement of President Buhari when the National Insurance Commission coordinated the insurance cover for 5000 frontline health workers in April 2020, provided by the insurance industry against Covid-19 risks.
On account of this feat, the National Association of Insurance and Pension Correspondents at the 2020 Confab in Lagos, recognised the steering effort of the Commission and was bestowed the 2020 Honorary Award, and the association chairman, Chuks Okonta said it was a “singular act that earned the insurance industry respect and commendation from both the government and the private sector.”
Elated Rasaq Salami, spokesperson of the Commission who received the award on behalf of the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Sunday Thomas, commended the association for the recognition, stating that NAICOM will continue to regulate with a human face, and also provide the enabling environment for operators, he also charged the NAIPCO members to continue to deepen the insurance space through information.
Thomas said at the policy flag off that it will enable families or named beneficiary of any health worker in the listed categories that dies in the line of duty to make a claim; doctors, N3m, Pharmacist/nurses N2m and others N1.5m, 19 life insurance companies were accredited to provide cover, and the premium paid was N112,500,000.00.
